I dream of food production on the roofs of the city. Imagine growing strawberries on the roof of the grocery store: it is the shortest path between producers and consumers, and avoids unnecessary transport. We can create new green jobs and contribute to making Malmö an ecologically functioning place.
Green spaces in the city help us deal with two of the consequences of climate change – more rain and a warmer climate. Plants can absorb large amounts of rain, and when the water subsequently evaporates it cools down the surrounding area and lowers temperatures.
In a modern city, the possibilities of creating more vegetation on the ground are limited. The only way to create large areas with more greenery is to let plants take root on city walls and roofs. This has tremendous environmental benefits and it is also very beautiful.
• Augustenborg Eco City is one of the largest ecological transformations of an entire neighbourhood. In 2010 the work was recognized in the prestigious UN World Habitat Awards.
• Green roofs and open stormwater systems with dams and canals are the two most obvious characteristics of the Eco City project. Past problems with flooding in basements have been eliminated.
