Practical Action – powering Nepal and Peru
Despite being essential to everyday life, access to electricity remains unavailable to 1.5 billion people worldwide. In this Practical Action-backed project (top right), women in Gatlang province, Nepal, transport the transmission cable for a micro hydro scheme. With the help of this renewable energy system, local people now spend much less of their income on expensive and harmful fuels and control their own energy access.
With access to energy, whole communities have the opportunity to develop and challenge their poverty – through improved communication systems, fridges for vaccines and many alternative income sources. These families in Peru (bottom right) are not connected to the grid system, but are working together to erect a wind turbine that will meet their basic energy needs.
