■ Representatives of 172 governments and 108 heads of state attended the UN Earth Summit – 20 years after the first global environmental conference in Stockholm. Some 2,400 NGOs and 17,000 activists participated in the parallel Global Forum, which had consultative status.

■ The Climate Change Convention that led to the Kyoto Protocol was adopted in Rio in 1992. The Convention on Biological Diversity and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification both resulted from the summit.
